Phoniatric service in Belarus has begun its practice in 1975. Now the leading centre in the country is the Republican Scientific and Practical National Centre of Otorhinolaryngology in Minsk. Also there are phoniatric consulting rooms almost in every Belarusian regional centre.
The Republic Scientific and Practical National Centre of Otorhinolaryngology has at its disposal the phoniatric department of the consultative out-patient clinic and specialised phoniatric beds in both adult and children otorhinolaryngology in-patient departments.

The Phoniatric Department of the Consultative Out-Patient Clinic
The Head of the Department: Natallia Kanoika – phoniatrician, otorhinolaryngologist of the highest qualification. She is a member of the Board of the Belarusian Scientific Society of Otorhinolaryngologists, member of the Union of the European Phoniatricians and International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics. She runs the department since 2001 and combines scientific achievements wih practical activity. She has publications in national and foreign theoretical and practical editions.
Also there are two phoniatricians, two phonopedists and a phonopedist-vocalist in the phoniatric department of the consultative out-patient clinic.
In the in-patient phoniatric department phoniatric treatment is provided to patients from all over Belarus.
- the development of methods for early voice disorder detection and the resolution of medical examination issues;
- rehabilitation of vocal function under functional and organic disorders including pareses and laryngeal paralyses, after reparative operations to restore the larynx lumen for those having larynx stenosis of various etiology;
- correction of voice and speech disorders under soft palate dysfunction;
- esophageal speech training for patients having had a laryngectomy.
Each year the staff of the phoniatric department of the consultative out-patient clinic advise about 15 thousand patients from different country regions. Over 400 patients with vocal function disorder get in-patient treatment each year. Proper peculiar methods of phoniatric treatment used in the centre contribute to quick vocal rehabilitation and working ability of those who are people of vocal and speech professions.
The staff of the phoniatric department of the consultative out-patient clinic carries out organizational work, implement methodics, practice and train future specialists on-site. Most physicians of the Republic Scientific and Practical National Centre of Otorhinolaryngology have more than 150 publications in scientific theoretical and practical editions, they appear in public media, deliver lectures on the prevention of professional voice disorders for students of creative (cultural) and pedagogic faculties and lecturers.

There are not so many phoniatricians in Belarus. The main centre of phoniatrics in our country is the Republican Scientific and Practical Centre of Otorhinolaryngology in Minsk.
There are also four phoniatricians and four phonopedists in the following region centres: Brest, Vitebsk, Mogilyov and Gomel - one phoniatrician and one phonopedist in each of them.

Has also received certificates for a rationalization proposal, has patents for different inventions.

Phoniatric care is provided to all patients with voice dysfunctions, especially those of voice and speech professions: artists, announcers, university and college teachers, teachers of music schools, kindergarten educators, students of pedagogical universities, participants of republican amateur vocal groups of all ages, church employees and other persons whose voice is an essential part of their individual image and profession.
Today's priority areas are:
- Development of methods for early diagnosis of voice disorders and issues of phoniatric expertise;
- Rehabilitation of voice functions of patients with vocal fold paralysis, after reconstructive surgery to restore the laryngeal lumen of patients with larynx stenosis of various etiologies;
- Correction of voice and speech disorders of patients with soft palate dysfunction;
- Training of artificial voice for patients after laryngectomy.
We have published the following guidelines: "Unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Symptoms, diagnostic and rehabilitation", "Prevention of professional voice disorders". We also have received certificates for two rationalization proposals and have formed applications for patents for two inventions.
Today, the phoniatricians have all modern means and methods for diagnosis and correction of voice disorders. Cabinets are equipped with otolaryngologist workstations with microscopes, rigid endoscopes and stroboscopes, and a videostroboscope system. If necessary, phoniatricians can use fibrolaringoskopy machines available in our centre for larynx diagnostics. We also produce X-ray scans of the larynx in the radiology department. For the rehabilitation of voice functions of patients with vocal fold paralysis, soft palate and functional voice disorders, department is equipped with apparatus for electrotherapy «vocaSTIM-MASTER» («PHYSIOMED", Germany).
The staff of the Phoniatrics Department consult up to 15,000 patients from different regions of the country every year. More than 400 patients with impaired vocal functions are provided with stationary treatment. Our specific methods used by phonopedists lead to early voice recovery of people of voice and speech professions.
Staff of Phoniatrics Department regularly carry out organizational and methodological work and trainings at the workplace. Doctors of Phoniatrics department have over 100 publications in scientific and popular issues, often appear in the media, read lectures on the prevention of occupational voice disorders for students and teachers of various artistic and pedagogical institutions.
