The Egyptian Society for Phoniatrics & Logopedics

The specialty of phoniatrics was established in 1974, the Unit of Phoniatrics in Ain Shams University, the first in Egypt, was established in 1975.

The master degree of phoniatrics was established in 1976. Thus, phoniatrics was identified by the state as an independent specialty. The education of logopedics started in Ain Shams University in 1975.

The Egyptian Society for Phoniatrics and Logopedics [ESPL] was established in 1976. It joined IALP as an affiliated society in 1977. The number of registered members of the society is 253. The number of phoniatricians (having master degree in medicine, phoniatrics) in Egypt is 148. The number of doctoral degrees among phoniatricians is 73.

Activities in the Field of Phoniatrics:

The ESPL organized the first Middle Eastern course for human communicative disorders for MDs in 1977.

The ESLP has hosted several annual and biannual seminars in human communicative disorders with eminent guest speakers since 1979.

The 4th National Congress of the ESPL, March 7 - 9, 2014, in Cairo, Egypt and celebrating the 40th Jubilee of Phoniatrics and Logopedics in Egypt.

The celebration of the world voice day in association with the Annual International Congress of Alexandria.

Future events in 2015:
The 5th Annual National Congress of the ESPL in Mansoura – Ras Elbar, March 25-27, 2015 and the celebration of the World Voice Day in association with that congress.

Publishing manuals in basic sciences and clinical aspects in phoniatrics and communication disorders.

- The 3rd National Annual Congress that took place in Alexandria in March.
- The World Voice Day was celebrated with academic pomp and artistic excellence in the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University in the month May.
- Representatives of the Society participated in the congress of IFOS, Seoul in June, PEVOC, Prague in August, IALP, Torino, in August/September.
- Some Society members participated actively in the events of the foundation of the EAP in Aachen, September.
- Members of the Society participated in various courses covering parts of the specialty.

The main events in 2014:
- The 4th National Annual Congress shall take place in March in Cairo.
- The 40th Jubilee of Phoniatrics and Logopedics in Egypt shall be celebrated during 2014.

The exact dates shall be announced in good time, and when the situation shall be calmer, so that as many as possible of our friends worldwide may have the possibility to participate in this celebration. It has been a very productive 40 years!
