Phoniatrics in France

The situation for phoniatrics in France in 2014 is the same as in 2013.

Phoniatrics is a subspeciality of ENT. The training is organized by the ENT universitary collegium in collaboration with the French Society of Phoniatrics and Communication Disorders. There is no more a recognized title and there is no official register, therefore the number of phoniatricians in France is not known; the estimate is up to 100 phoniatricians.

The board members of the French Society of Phoniatrics and Communication Disorders will be in 2015:

President: Pierre Oliver Vedrine (Cannes)
General Secretary: Virginie Woisard (Toulouse)
Treasurer: Antoine Giovanni (Marseille)
Website Master: Yves Ormezzano (Paris)

The French Society of Phoniatrics and Communication Disorders organized two meetings this year: the national meeting of the society was held in October and the Phoniatrics Thematic Day in spring

Events in 2014
National meeting of the society: 13th October
Phoniatrics Thematic Day: Phoniatrics and Neurology

Future events in 2015
Phoniatrics Thematic Day: Microsurgery of Vocal Folds
Phoniatric session during the ENT meeting in October
National society meeting in December: Speech and Swallowing Disorders

Phoniatrics in France

In France, phoniatrics is since 2008 a subspecialty of ENT. The training is organized by the ENT universitary collegium. ENT students have the obligation to perform 6 months in a unit specialized in audio phonology or phoniatrics and a national training is organized in association with the Société Française de Phoniatrie et de Pathologie de la Communication.

For these reasons, it's now difficult to know the exact number of phoniatricians in France. The phoniatric medical practice is more mixed with ENT practice. Regarding our last survey, we can estimate the number of phoniatricians practicing Phoniatrics and ENT to be approximately 90. Although Phoniatrics is an element of ENT training, the about 120 ENT residents probably will focus on ENT. It will presumably take more or less 5 years before we start observing a change.

Concerning the next year, our main event is the meeting of the French Society of Phoniatrics on 14th October 2013. Further events are listed on the website of our society: www.phoniatrie.fr.

Phoniatrics in France

The situation for Phoniatrics in France has changed two years ago, when the ENT colleagues (who are in charge of our training) decided to restrict the training to ENT students. Before this decision, any kind of medical doctors could follow the phoniatric training. Therefore, phoniatricians in France are now ENT colleagues with the obligation of 6 months in audiology or phoniatrics and two days of specific training in phoniatrics. That is poor but it was the solely way we found to promote an activity in phoniatrics in France.
