Phoniatrics in Mexico

In the middle of the XX. century, some Mexican medical doctors were interested in phoniatrics and audiology and were trained in Europe.

Mexico has an independent medical specialty named Human Communication Medicine that includes PHONIATRICS, AUDIOLOGY, OTONEUROLOGY, LANGUAGE AND SPEECH PATHOLOGY AND SWALLOWING DISORDERS IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS.

This official medical specialty exists since 1972 with the recognition of the Ministry of Health.The specialty was recognized by the National Autonomus University of Mexico in 1989. There are four official public general hospitals offering the training program of this specialty. The studies take after general medicine studies 4 complete years. The fourth year is to make a deeper study in otoneurology, audiology, phoniatrics or language pathology.

The Mexican Association for Human Communication , Audiology, Otoneurology, and Phoniatrics (Asociación Mexicana de Comunicación Humana, Audiología, Otoneurologia, y Foniatría) has 464 individual members. This association has also speech pathologists as additional members.

All active specialists have to be certified by the Human Communication, Audiology, Otoneurology and Phoniatrics Council, that belongs to the Mexican Medical Academy. There are 493 members certified for the medical activities. Every year there is a certification exam, in 2014 there will be 23 doctors for examination.

All the medical specialties need to have a certification and every certain number of years the active members need to renew this certification in order to be qualified for the medical activities of the specialty.

The General Hospital of Mexico has 10 places. The Mexican Institute of Social Security in 2 different hospitals has 16 places. The National Rehabilitation Institute has 20 medical residents. The association has a regular academical session every 2 months. Every year there is an Association National Symposium during 3 days with different national and international lecturers.

The Pediatrics National Institute and the Children General Hospital Federico Gomez in Mexico City have a phoniatrics and audiology service and training program for speech pathologists with special lip and palate clinics.

There are some official hospitals all over the country that offer phoniatrics services for the population.

Centro de Foniatría y Audiología is a private concentration clinic for phoniatrics and audiology, with clinical, surgical, rehabilitation and research activities all over the year, courses for ENTcolleagues, pediatricians, singers, actors, with an integral plan for the voice and communication health and has the National Coordination for World Voice Day since 2000 and is the representative for UEP in Mexico. The director is Prof. Dr. R. Eugenia Chavez Calderon.

There are several private medical phoniatric consultories in some private clinics and private hospitals in different cities and towns of the country.
