Phoniatrics in Romania

The year of 2014 was a good year for scientific events in Romanian ENT.

We had several meetings with international faculty.

The two most important events were:
13th Danube International Otorhinolaryngological Congress 2014 and ENT National Congress 2014, 2nd - 5th of July, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, http://orl2014.org/invitation

Fifth pediatric ENT National Conference, 16th - 18th of October, Timişoara, Romania, http://www.orl.org.ro/

The domain of phoniatrics registered a great success this year in our country.

Romania registered 7 events for World Voice Day all over the country. Those were:

Symposium “Interdisciplinary Approaches to Voice Disorder Therapy” - Cluj Napoca

Giuseppe Verdi – Requiem - Cluj Napoca

Vocal Hygiene for Professional Voice Users - Târgu Mureş

Classical music concert - Timişoara

Symposium “Voice Matters” - Bucharest

Workshop “The Singing Voice – a Medical and Artistic Perspective” - Cluj Napoca

Symposium “Prevention of Teachers’ Voice Disorders” - Alba Iulia.

The Romanian ENT and Phoniatric Community received all events with great joy and interest. All events have been a great success and managed to raise awareness on health problems both in professional and non-professional voice.

For 2015 in Romania, we are expecting as main ENT event “The National ENT Conference” together with a number of other smaller conferences and courses and we all hope to have a larger number of events registered for World Voice Day 2015.

Phoniatrics in Romania

Interests in the field of Phoniatrics have been registered in Romania since the beginning of the 20th Century, when in 1936 in Cluj was published a paper named “Voice and Vocal Hygiene” written by G. Buzoian. In the following years after the Second World War there was a decrease in activity, but after 1950 ENT doctors became more and more interested in voice and speech pathology. The peak point in the history of Romanian Phoniatrics was in 1974, when the first Department of Phoniatrics was established, where, the first acknowledged Romanian Phoniatrician, Dr. C. Bogdan, began its activity.

Nowadays, Phoniatrics in Romania is an over specialization of Otolaryngology and there are probably around 20 certified phoniatricians all around the country, mainly based in University Centers, which are trying to lead forward this fascinating field.

The year of 2013 was a good year for the Romanian ENT and, subsequently, for the phoniatricians. We had two prestigious events that took place in Romania this year:

- The National Otolaryngology Conference, 27-30th of June, Oradea-Baile Felix, Romania http://www.cn-orl-2013.ro/

- The Pediatric ENT Conference 12-14th of September 2013, Brasov, Romania http://www.orl.org.ro/.

Both events gathered doctors from all around the country and abroad. They shared the results of their work and provided a good environment for exchanging knowledge and ideas.

Of course Phoniatrics was not forgotten. At both mentioned events, oral presentations and papers in the field of Phoniatrics were accepted and discussed.

In 2014 we are looking forward to another ENT event that will take place in Cluj during the summer:

- 13th Danube International Otorhinolaryngological Congress 2014 and ENT National Congress 2014, 2-5th of July, Cluj-Napoca, Romania http://orl2014.org/invitation

In 2013 the Romanian ENT community will be once more reunited during The National Otolaryngology Conference on a date that will be announced. Also the large University Hospitals all over the country, are organizing each year a number of training courses for residents and specialists, including all ENT & HNS fields.
