Phoniatrics in Spain

The situation of phoniatrics in Spain has not changed since last year.

Since 2000 there is no specific training in phoniatrics. For decades, the phoniatric section exists either in public or private health services. There have been numerous meetings of the Spanish Medical Phoniatric Society and the related section of ENT (SEORL) and Physical Medicine (SERMEF) with the national health minister to regulate training in phoniatrics and to provide a legal frame. At this moment they value the possibility that in the future there will be an area of specific training on other specialties.

In 2014 we have spend a lot of work to make phoniatrics more visible in the professional colleges of medicine. A register of doctors that work in the field of phoniatric has been established in Castilla-La Mancha and Andalucia. We hope to have it in the other regions within next year.

SOMEF has 120 members.

Phoniatrics in Spain

In 1950 J. Perelló introduced Phoniatrics in Spain, creating a Department of Phoniatrics at the Department of ORL School of Medicine of Barcelona. At this time many professionals come from medicine to engage the attention of the patients with communication diseases, thus consolidating in Spain under Phoniatrics skills as a medical specialty. These include J. Lopez Tappero, J. J. Gisbert Alós or M. Torres de Gaso among others.

In 1982 the Medical Society of Phoniatrics Spanish (SOMEF) is founded. The SOMEF counts with 116 members (data from 2011). Currently exercise approximately 110 (data from 2011) phoniatricians who perform their work in public (30 centers, data from 2011) and private healthcare network.

- Hospitals with specific Phoniatric departments depending on ENT or Physical Medicine that works with all communication problems (language, speech, voice, hearing and dysphagia).
- Phoniatric Private clinics and centers concerted with Public Health Service.

Some are places of reference for certain pathologies:

- Cochlear Implants: Phoniatric Unity – ENT Service, University Hospital of Salamanca and Hospital Dr. Peset of Valencia;
- Dysphagia: Phoniatric Unity – Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Service, Hospital Valle de Hebrón of Barcelona;
- Cleft Palate: Service of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Phoniatric Unity – Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Service, University Hospital La Paz of Madrid.

We still have no specific training in Phoniatrics. Nevertheless for decades the Phoniatric section has existed not just in private but also in public health, depending on ENT and Physical Medicine services.

Numerous meetings have been held between the Spanish Medical Phoniatric Society, the related section of ENT (SEORL), the Physical Medicine (SERMEF) and the National Health Minister aiming to regulate the training in Phoniatrics and also to provide a harmonized legal frame.

The authorities and legislators are facing the possibility of creating a special training program amidst other specialities, not creating a new speciality.

Our Activities 2013:
- Salamanca, 7th International Meeting on Advances in Audiology (May 16th, 17th and 18th, 2013). This workshop is part of the Expertise Program in Audiology hosted by University of Salamanca though it is open to the main public (students, professionals, users,…).
- Madrid, March 14th-16th X Normal and Pathologic Voice Course. Organized by Clinic Hospital San Carlos
- May 23rd-25th XIX National Congress SOMEF 2013 held in Vilanova y la Geltru. 014

Forecasted Activities:
- We are preparing our XX National Congress SOMEF in Logroño (La Rioja) which will take place at the end of May.
- Other meetings and events will follow and are organised by colleagues and institutions. (language used: Spanish)
- Salamanca, 8th International Meeting on Advances in Audiology (May 22th, 23th and 24th, 2014).

Since 2000 there is no specific training in Phoniatrics. ENT and Physical Médicine residents with special interest in this topic look for teams and training in specific areas without managing to have a global study program. Due to the crisis the number of specialists working in public heath has diminised.

2012 Activities:
As in previous years, in Salamanca the 6th. International Meeting on Advances in Audiology took place. This workshop is a part of the Expert training in Audiology of University of Salamanca but open to the public (students, professionals, users, …).

In June 2012, in Santander our national congress took place with papers from Italy, Spain and Germany and participants of different countries.

The Congress of the European Society of Swallowing Disorders was held in Barcelona from 25th to 27th October 2012.

2013 Activities:
For the next year, we are preparing the National Congress in Vilanova at the end of May.

Physicians in Spain are working in Public Health Services but are not legally recognized. There is no legal framework for regulation of exercise and training in the speciality. The Medical Phoniatrician Degree from the University of Salamanca or the Training of Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona has been the main resources for the training of speech therapists in Spain. At present, the authorities of the Ministry of Health are considering regulating the education and practice in Phoniatrics as a Specific Training Area or as an Independent Specialty.

A national Congress is organized once every year. The last congress was held in Valencia: 2011 XVII National Congress Valencia, 26-28 May (www.geyseco.es/somef).
